The time for Green server is near!
My life as a filthy casual these days when it comes to Everquest continued with the Green Beta. I logged on a few times and honestly, it wasn’t necessarily about finding any bugs to report. Instead, I took the time to learn some new starting cities.
When I played EQ more consistently back in the early 2000s, I liked to think I knew most of the starting cities as I had several alts outside of my 65 Paladin. As I went back to these cities on Green beta, I realized that my memory wasn’t as good as I thought except for Freeport and Kaladim. Furthermore, I was annoyed at myself when I found that I had become too reliant on map functions in nearly every modern game including the Brewall maps on EQ live.
With this in mind, I decided to focus on one city as I narrowed down what my first alt character would be on Green. I knew I was going to play a dwarf Paladin to relive my EQ experience, but I knew I needed to try something new. A friend of mine’s Dad during the height of my playing days had a Halfling Druid and that character was extremely useful. I am looking forward to playing a Halfling Druid as my alt. Therefore, I took to running around Rivervale and the Misty Thicket. It’s a great city and awesome newbie zone.
Outside of playing on Green beta, I have been reading the Project 1999 wiki to plan out early quests and refresh my memory on some of the zones. My printer will be working hard to print out maps of some of the early zones. Back in the day, I became an Alt-Tab master to go to Allahkazam, but I am going to try something different this time.
The forums on Project 1999 have been a source of enjoyment as I ready myself for Green server. Most of the arguments and debates have been good natured. The vast majority of people are just ready to enjoy Classic and aren’t getting too caught up in the rat race of gaining legacy items. While not truly Classic in my mind, /list is a great innovation by the development team and I applaud them. As a filthy casual, my chances of acquiring a Manastone or Guise are likely still remote, but I do have a better chance now.
Only a few days to go now! I will be sure to spend the time doing research on the zones, watching EQ videos on Youtube, and of course preparing my wife for the extra gaming hours!
(A small update for my readers who come to my blog. Book Two of the Society of the Leaf Chronicles is plodding along. I have been writing in bursts and have the next few scenes planned out. I just need to find the time to get the words on paper.)
Hope to see you on Green Server on Friday night!
